wasting time on social media

associating yourself with more labels especially with politics & religion as paul graham said Keep your Identity Small

wasting your time with people who drain your energy & waiting for the wrong people (your heart will feel this)

wasting time in the endless meetings

I guess it’s sad people only realise the value of time as they grow older, but I have been lucky enough to have had this realisation at a young age.

Treat time as one of your most valuable assets & not many realise this in their pursuit of materialistic success.

Say No if you have to make time for yourself & your loved one, & also be okay with people telling you No.

We took pride in that our solar system is in the center of the galaxy, only to realise that we are 26000 light years away from the center of the galaxy. I am not able to express It through words but every time when I do a hard thing I feel that I can do anything In my life, I get a feeling where I can just get done a piece of work which I thought I could not do It earlier. It’s like when you do a certain hard thing, It has a great level of positive net impact on other areas of your life at-least to certain degree for sure.

Also this only happens when you have done enough hard things consistently over certain period of time, does not mean months, years or decades - you get that sense of feeling 3-4 weeks when you are Into that thing and It does compound.

One hard thing that I have been doing consistently (as of my writing It’s been 3 weeks) is showing up at the gym at 5:30 every single morning or running. The society has always been told us to be normal - do good at your studies, get a job, get married, make babies, take a much less riskier path, do things that everyone else has been doing, make a lot of money, retire and finally die.

Jeff Bezos In his last Amazon shareholder letter wrote something like this:

“In what ways does the world pull at you in an attempt to make you normal? How much work does it take to maintain your distinctiveness?…You have to pay a price for your distinctiveness…don’t expect it to be easy or free”

You can see this all around you and I have experienced this enough in 26 years of my life so far.

The only thing you can do to break this cycle and be uniquely distinct from others by doing hard things - do things that feels like work to you and when other people see you they think you are fool, weird or whatever the hell they might think - that’s what you are looking at.

I’m writing this as a reminder to myself so I can do enough hard things, endure enough suffering & pain deliberately. It builds resilience and more importantly It builds a strong mental strength.

So whatever It is that you are after my friend - just go do It. Ignore the outside world, listen to your inner self and get the fucking work done.

I think there’s something magical & a sense of feeling of huge accomplishment when you do hard things.
Introduction

Ever since Google dropped their paper on transformers - Attention Is All You Need It’s been a crazy ride in the tech landscape especially in the field of AI/ML which is rapidly accelerating with some of the key players like OpenAI ,Google Deepmind , Anthropic and the thriving Open Source community led by Meta AI and Xai working towards achieving the Goal Of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Now, if you’re scratching your head and wondering what the heck AGI is, don’t worry. You’re not alone. In simple terms, AGI is the idea of creating a machine that can think and learn like a human. It’s like giving birth to a super-intelligent robot baby.

It seems like OpenAI is leading the race towards AGI and no one really knows for sure how long It’ll take us before we reach that point ( some say it’s around the corner like Elon Musk is pretty optimistic "AI will probably be smarter than any single human next year. By 2029, AI is probably smarter than all humans combined" and Yann Lecun " This notion of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is complete nonsense because human intelligence is very, very specialised" )

Whatever the case maybe I truly believe we are going through one of the most fundamental and significant changes In the history of humanity through AI and we are In for one hell of a ride. It’s really an amazing time to be alive to witness this happening and be part of it and contribute In whatever way possible :)

In this post I wanted to discuss about one such System that has captured the Imagination of so many People around the world : ChatGPT

I assume that a System like ChatGPT has already somewhat become a part of your daily life either using It to bounce off your creative ideas and brainstorm with it , analyse a piece of long document , help fix a bug In your code or actually create your own AI mentor just like how I did and have access to the best minds In world. Trust me It’s truly one of the best times to be alive

But there’s one thing that kind of stuck with me from the past few weeks was how people sometimes underestimate and largely overestimate the capabilities of such models. Whether the question of these Systems “has It really Impacted the lives of every Individual Or It Impacted only a handful of folks who are eager to try new tools and adopt Into their day-to-day lives? How has AI changed the way we work , collaborate and live?” may be It’s a whole new topic altogether”. I believe there’s a basic necessity for people to have an high level understanding of what these systems are , what can they do and what can’t they do and what’s likely going to be the future of It - that’s exactly what I wanted to talk about In this post. Demystifying GPTs

How Systems Like ChatGPT Are Built

Let’s dive In and understand what It really takes to create a model like ChatGPT and what are the key steps that are Involved. This post covers four Key Phases of ChatGPT Development and for each stage I’ll cover

What exactly Is the Objective or Goal of each stage ?

What is the Intuition behind each stage?

Mathematical Representation ( For folks who want to get a sense of the technicalities )

Overview

Let’s have broader view of E2E development process of ChatGPT

The summary of the above diagram : In order to create or build a model like ChatGPT and put Into the real world , you’ll have to go through 4 Phases : Pre-Training , Supervised Fine-Tuning , RLHF ( Reinforcement Learning From Human Feedback ) which involves Reward Modelling and Reinforcement Learning.

Each of these stages will have a Dataset that we use to train the underlying model, the key Objective/Goal that is Involved , what exactly is the model we get once we train it on the data and generally how does the scale of the data look like. Before we Jump right into understanding these concepts , In summary the above diagram looks like the below meme

The Pre-trained model is a monster ( Pre-Training is done In an Unsupervised manner ) since we train this model on all sorts of the good and bad data that the Internet has ever seen like misinformation , clickbait info - You get what I mean when I say it’s trained on Huge volumes of Internet data. - It’s sometimes harmful or even dangerous to put this model directly into the world.

Then this monster was trained on a higher quality data annotated by the humans teaching it how to behave appropriately , hence the word supervising - just like a teacher supervising a student. OpenAI calls this process behaviour cloning , since you are demonstrating the model how to behave and the model clones to that behaviour.

Finally you have the RLHF stage where you just don’t supervise the model , but also enable the model to make mistakes , learn from It’s failures long enough that it’s now tuned enough to be socially acceptable to be put into the real world. This the model that you , me and everyone else Is using.

Phase 1 Pre Training

Pre-Training is the phase-1 of building a model like ChatGPT. This is the phase where you collect large volumes of Internet data at scale which is of very low quality and build a foundational/base model called Pre-Trained LLM. The training dataset is a mixture of several sources ranging from Common Crawl of Internet , GitHub , Wikipedia and many sources. A model like LLaMA-2 from Meta uses almost 2-T tokens of Internet data for It’s training. A 2 trillion token dataset is truly massive. To put It In perspective, If each token was a word and you printed out the dataset In books, you would have a library of around 4 million 500-page books. The below Is the data distribution of LLaMA model

so much of data Is being used to train these models that we might eventually run out of the data to train and likely need to rely on synthetic data generation or propriety data from companies ( Those companies which will get their hands on this data will surely have an edge)

What are we actually doing In this stage by collecting all this data

Before we feed this raw text data (This Is called as the Training Data) Into the models we need to convert them Into something they are able to understand. Unlike humans , machines does not have the capability to understand what a word Is In It’s raw form and hence they have to be converted Into something called tokens. This process of converting the text Into unique Integers or tokens is called Tokenization.

You can think of tokens as a word , a character or even a sub-word of a word (Like -meda In Andromeda) depending on the model that is being used. Below is an example of how OpenAI GPT-4 tokenizer converts a text into set of unique Tokens. You can try It for yourself here. All these Unique set of tokens becomes a Vocabulary for the GPT model and you can think of this as GPTs own dictionary. More the unique tokens It as access to , more the Variety In Generating the texts.

Language Modelling

The key objective In this phase Is to train this model on huge volume of low quality data so that It’s able to accurately predict with a certain probability what’s going to come next when an Input (Prompt) Is given by the users , i’e predicting the next word/token. Basically a Pre-Trained GPT Is optimised for Text Completion. This Is what Is called as Language Modelling.

You Complete Me : Give A Prompt & Wait For Completion :)

Let’s explain this with a simple example :

Suppose let’s say when you feed something like “What is your favourite” (Context of 4 words here) to the GPT model , It’s trained to predict what’s likely going to come next In order to complete the sentence with a higher probability. It can be anything like “Car” , “Movie” , “Sport” , “Colour” etc. The model takes one token at a time and predicts next one by looking at the entire context. You might think this Is very simple that the model Is just trying to predict next word/token , but In doing so It actually Is learning a lot more about the language and It’s properties. For example : when you feed the below Wikipedia article about Virat Kolhi , the model is able to understand a lot of underlying representations about Virat like his profession , gender , nationality , achievements and accolades etc. So you can Imagine how powerful these models are even though It's just predicting next word.

If you are Interested In knowing how these models are ( also one of the core reasons Is the more data and compute being thrown at these models ) getting better over time and want to know the underlying principle that guides, you can checkout my blog on Entropy : The Fundamental Force That Governs Everything In The Universe.

Pre-Training Is the stage where most of the hard work happens , almost 85-98% of resources are likely to be used during this stage right from Data to Computation. This stage is almost similar to you working out and sweating hard in the gym ( since you have Pre-trained It on huge volumes of data for months , now the model as a better understanding of the Data and It’s relationships) and the subsequent stages are likely going to be super grateful for your help for making it easier for them. It’s like opening your creative boost of energy after a really good workout at the gym.

Intuition Behind SFT

During the Pre-Training stage we know that we train the model on a large body of text data with the key objective of predicting the next word by assigning a higher probability to the predicted word over other words in the vocabulary. By doing so the model is very capable of generating texts. The problem is these models are not good at "Communication" or In general generating texts that Is aligned with Interest of the user.

When you prompt a Pre-Trained model with a question any of the following Is possible

Answer The Question

Generate a Series Of Additional Questions

It Might Say It Was An Important Question That Was Raised In The Context Of …..

Ex : I Prompted Gemma-2B , an Open Source Pre-Trained GPT from Google.
Prompt : Which is the nearest star
Response :

So , now you get why cannot we use Pre-Trained models as It Is. Like we saw In the Pre-Training phase they are optimised for text completion. You can still get the desired output by changing the Input text In a way that will solve your problem ( This area Is called Prompt Engineering ! ) , but this Is not a convenient Interaction for folks who are not experts, you expect these models to the job and a model that can consistently answer the queries and not just complete them. Basically we need models that can behave how a human behaves when he/she Is asked with a Question Or we need models that Is optimised to achieve a specific task like Q & A , Code Generation , Summarising and rewriting , rephrasing texts etc and we need to guide models towards this behaviour . This Is what we do In SFT.

SFT Data Set

How do you do that ? We know any kind of ML models mimic It’s training data. Hence during SFT we fine-tune our Pre-Trained GPT model with a dataset that tells how to appropriately respond to a specific prompt( Like how to respond to a prompt for Q&A , translation etc). We create a High Quality dataset ( called demonstration data because through this data we demonstrate these models how to behave and respond properly). The way we do this Is by collecting a bunch of data annotated by humans ( these humans are experts In a specific area , ex: A Physics expert Is preparing the training data to create a model that responds properly when tasked with Physics questions ) In the following format
{ Prompt , Response }

Below Is the distribution of Prompts (Use-Case Specific) used by OpenAI to fine-tune a Pre-Trained GPT

This Is how the training data would look like

SFT is also called as alignment.

Look at the below example from OpenAI clearly showing the differences between the response from a Pre-Trained GPT V/s a SFT GPT

Phase 3 and 4 Reinforcement Learning With Human Feedback

The real technical marvel of why ChatGPT models are so good at what they do Is mainly attributed to RLHF - Incorporating Reinforcement Learning and Human Feedback Into Language modelling.

Why RLHF

There’s no single valid reason In the AI community on why RLHF is needed. The simple answer Is It just Improves the Performance and Works. As we see In the below Image InstructGPT (RLHF + SFT ) outperforms SFT alone.

Here’s a great In-depth note by Yoav Goldberg on why RL Is needed

The Diversity Argument: Supervised learning limits responses to specific demonstrator-provided answers, suppressing the natural diversity of language and potentially valid alternative expressions.

The Theoretical Argument: RL allows for both positive and negative feedback, enabling learners to avoid misleading or incomplete demonstrations by directly querying for correctness, making the learning process more robust against adversarial or negligent demonstrators.

The Core Argument: Supervised learning may inadvertently teach models to fabricate answers when they lack knowledge, while RL encourages truthfulness by penalising made-up answers and rewarding reliance on internal knowledge or choosing to abstain when uncertain.

Teaching to Abstain: Supervised learning struggles to teach models to abstain from answering when they lack knowledge, whereas RL can be designed to reward “I don’t know” responses appropriately, although finding the right balance in rewards is challenging.

What Is RLHF

We know that In SFT we teach the model how to behave and respond with appropriate answers to the prompts and essentially making them good at communication and dialogue. But just like how, say If you ask a question like “Explain Why The Sky Is Blue” to 10 different people , you might get 10 different answers, the SFT model also will generate many such different responses and we don’t actually teach which response Is better than which In SFT.

RLHF : How The Model Learns Which Is Good Vs Bad Response ?

The idea behind RLHF Is what If we have a scoring function that gives assigns a scalar score a response for a given Prompt? Then we use this scoring function to further fine-tune our SFT model In a way such that It always responds to a prompt such that It achieves highest score using the scoring function ( Reward Model). This Is exactly what we do In RLHF.

RLHF has 2 Phases

Reward Modelling

Train a reward model that assigns a scalar score for how good or bad a response Is.

Reinforcement Learning

Then fine-tune the SFT using the above reward model such that It gives highest score/reward for every response by SFT.

Reward Modelling

In RM Phase we train an ML model that gives a score for a pair of
{Prompt , Response}.

The biggest challenge In RM is getting the accurate data since the responses can significantly vary when someone Is asked to generate and also might be difficult sometimes. How can you generate a text when you are asked to write a short poem ( Haiku ) about the milky-way galaxy ?

This Is why In RM we basically collect the data by asking Humans to Rank the responses generated by a SFT model for each Prompt , because It’s a lot easier to assign a rank rather than creating or generating a response. once this process Is done , we finally create the training data that Is needed to train our reward models which get’s an Idea of What Is a good response V/s Bad response.

RM : Data Set

The training data format In RM looks something like this
{Prompt , Winning_Response , Losing_Response }
and we call this data as the comparison data. we generate at-least 100K - 1M of these and eventually train the RM such that It gives a highest score for a response when give a prompt. But how do you do make a RM give a concrete scalar score? Just like how we can get our fellow humans to do basically anything given the right incentive and we train the RM to do anything given the right objective which Is our loss function.

RM : Algorithm / Objective

The key objective In RM is to train the model In such a way that the loss function ( Cross Entropy ) Is minimised over time. How do you do that ? By Maximising the difference In scores between the Winning_Response and the Losing Response.

RM : Mathematical Formulation

Reinforcement Learning

Reinforcement Learning Is the final stage of training a GPT model where you further fine-tune the SFT model such that for each given prompt It generates a response such that the reward model gives a maximum score.

OpenAI has a really good representation of the entire RLHF stage :

Reinforcement learning Is still an active area of research currently being done by a few big Players like OpenAI , Google and Anthropic. It’s still a concept that Is very new to me as well ( as of writing this blog ) and do not have much mathematical understanding of how exactly It works. If you are Interested In It checkout this blog by OpenAI on Learning From Human Preferences And Proximal Policy Optimisation (PPO)

RLHF Summary

SFT models does not know what response Is Good or Bad. Hence RLHF

Train a reward model that learns how to assign a score given {Prompt , Winning_Response , Losing_Response } data.

Use this reward model to further fine-tune the SFT model In a Reinforcement Learning environment such that for any prompt the model generates a response for which reward model assigns a higher score.

This has really been amazing writing this piece of blog , there are still a lot of topics that I wanted touch base upon ( actually wanted to dig deep Into RLHF and learn the maths for better explanation , I’ll probably do this sometime later ) like hallucination problem with ChatGPT , It’s one dimensional knowledge and a lot more , bias, GPT OS , Jail-breaking GPTs and Prompt Injection etc . I’ll try covering them In another blog.

What Can These Models Currently Do

Finally I want to answer the question what can actually these models do given there nature of understanding huge volumes of the text data.

The current set of models are good at System 1 thinking , but not at System 2

The automatic operations of System 1 generate surprisingly complex patterns of ideas, but only the slower System 2 can construct thoughts in an orderly series of steps.

– Daniel Kahneman in Thinking, Fast and Slow

System 1 thinking is a near-instantaneous process; It happens automatically, Intuitively, and with little effort. It’s driven by instinct and our experiences. System 2 thinking is slower and requires more effort. It is conscious and logical.

Courtesy - Andrej Karpathy

Consider the above scenario , when asked the question 2+2 , we are able to quickly with a very little to no effort able to answer the question. where are when we are asked to compute 17*24 , we do It In rather slow form since It’s complex , needs bit of an effort and requires you to make some critical thinking sometimes. The current set of GPT models are really good at System 1 thinking but they lack System 2 thinking which Is something that Is needed In order to solve Complex Problems at hand.

Signing OFF

I hope you learnt something through this blog , the world of GPTs are truly fascinating and when you actually learn how these models are built and kind of have an Idea what’s going to come In the coming years Is beyond crazy. I truly believe we live In a time where fundamentally humanity Is moving towards creating something that we have never seen before , the way we live , work and collaborate might change entirely. I believe the rapid advancements In AI Is fundamentally needed for the advancement of our Civilisation and Imagine the kind value It can bring particularly In the area of Medicine ( Imagine curing cancer , making people walk/talk who are not able to , giving vision to people who cannot see ) , Space for us becoming a multi-planetary civilisation and more than anything for me It’s In the beauty of learning how these things work deep enough. It’s Just fascinating.

Table of Contents

Entropy - The Fundamental Force That Governs Everything In The Universe

I’m always fascinated where curiosity takes me while learning Physics and In the recent times it has just been accelerated. It is like having a Child-Like curiosity and eagerness to Learn how things around us work by asking the most complex questions like What is the the beginning of the Universe? How did it evolve ? Is there an end to it ? How did life came to exist on Earth? Is there Life beyond Earth ? What is Life ? to the most simple questions like What is Sound ? Why does the sky look blue ? Why doesn’t a ball bounce as high the second time as it did the first time? There’s something beautiful in everything if you look and observe deep enough.

Imagine taking a time machine back to the very beginning of the Universe and to the very moment it expanded - Is it not fascinating to know? The last stars will die 120 trillion years (Our own sun will die 5 billion years from now before turning into a white dwarf ) from now followed by 10^108 of just black holes , Imagine what it’s like to be at the very ending of last black hole and we humans are born and dead In less than a second compared to the grand cosmic scale - If facts like these don’t boggle your mind and make you curious enough to learn, I don’t know what else will!

Okay! - Let’s get back to what I wanted to talk about

Entropy - Meet The Invisible Force That’s Shaping Our Lives And The Universe

I was writing an article (It’ll be out soon!) that explains in simple terms What the heck are GPTs(Generative Pre-Trained Transformers) , Why is it able to Capture the Imagination of so many people around the world and What’s going to be the State Of AI In the near future. While trying to explain how these models (ex: GPT-4, Claude-3 , LLaMA-2 etc) are getting better at what they do, I stumbled upon a concept that guides these models to strive better and It is the very own fundamental force that guides you , me , a cat , dog , our sun and everything else in the Universe. It’s one of the most misunderstood concept’s in whole of Physics and yet so fundamental that we don’t acknowledge It often.

It is also probably the only proof we have got so far for the existence of time and even be the reason that life exists on earth or elsewhere.

Entropy

Entropy is nothing but the measure of disorder , randomness , uncertainty associated with the outcome of a certain event. In simple terms It explains why everything In Life gets complicated , not less as time goes on.

Entropy increases over time and It is the reason Why relationships gets complicated over time , your room gets messier , battles are fought and people die , revolutions occur, your body gets weaker as you age , the heat from your coffee spreads out , the reason why business fails , empires fall and so on. It’s a natural non-reversible process and In the long run disorder always increases.

Entropy was discovered by a German Physicist and Mathematician Rudolf Clausius who studied the The Mechanical Theory Of Heat , which led to the discovery of the Second of Law Of Thermodynamics.

He explained that heat always flows from a body at higher temperature to the one at a lower temperature and very unlikely (Improbable) a heat can flow from a body at colder temperature to higher temperature without having an accompanying change elsewhere .

Have you ever wondered how, when you rub your hands together and share that warmth with someone else, the heat flows from your hands to theirs, like a generous gift of coziness? but the same kind of warmth cannot be experienced back from them without rubbing their hands. Imagine in the summer turning off your AC and the heat from the surrounding enters your house and it gets hotter and hotter (a natural process) over time where as in colder months no matter what without having a heater , your room cannot get heat. This is the same way how your coffee cools down the longer It is left out and the heat from the coffee spreads out into the room which happens naturally but if you want to heat a cold water to make coffee - you need to do some work and cannot happen without an accompanying change ie, without a power source you cannot naturally heat a cold water.

Clausius also observed that in a steam engine which converts thermal to a mechanical energy , only a fraction of energy was actually being useful to get the work done. Where did the rest of the energy go?

This Curiosity led to the discovery of Entropy and Rudolf Clausius summarised his findings as :

Just like how without a constant supply of AC to your room in summer it get’s hotter and hotter , how if you do not constantly work every day on your relationships someday you might eventually wake up to divorce papers and how you might be physically be in bad shape if you do not workout on a regular basis , Clausius said over time things will move from being ordered to a more disordered state ( similarly he figured out that in a steam engine , 100% of the energy was not being utilised as energy was spreading out over time and constant work had to be done to keep things moving)

Derek from the YouTube Channel Veritasium Beautifully explains the Entire concept of Entropy

Entropy also explains why time always moves in one direction.

The increase of disorder or entropy is what distinguishes the past from the future, giving a direction to time.

Brian Cox Explaining The Arrow Of Time

The Arrow of Time dictates that as each moment passes, things change, and once these changes have happened, they are never undone. Permanent change is a fundamental part of what it means to be human. We all age as the years pass by — people are born, they live, and they die. I suppose it’s part of the joy and tragedy of our lives, but out there in the universe, those grand and epic cycles appear eternal and unchanging. But that’s an illusion. See, in the life of the universe, just as in our lives, everything is irreversibly changing.

If you closely observe Entropy is everywhere and it’s part of our everyday lives

Companies and Business will fail if we are not constantly putting the work to keep moving things like adapting to the changes, hiring bright minds and moving on from the unfits. Making sure that things are in orderly state requires constant energy expenditure and In order to minimise Entropy over time companies spend money , resources , time to make sure business does not lead to bankruptcy.

In Everyday Life : Say that you are cleaning your room every single day and it looks amazing ( orderly state) and now consider the scenario over time you become lazy and you leave your room as it is for days and months. It get’s messy like hell and without constant work ( ie keeping your room clean everyday) your room will always be in a more disorder state. There are few ways to be ordered but a million ways to be more disordered.

This is why most of the simple things in life like regularly working out , Learning a skill , keeping your relationships health feels complicated but it’s necessary to put constant effort for things not to fall.

You might think all of this might make us sad or pointless right ? Just Imagine that world. Even a person who has everything is always looking to figure out what's his next purpose in Life.

This is why those who take advantage of Entropy and acknowledge that it’s a natural part of our everyday life and needs a constant effort.

Take Elon Musk

The Kind of everyday Entropy that he is dealing with on a regular basis is something that’s unimaginable to people like you and me. Take SpaceX and Tesla , Musk’s Rocket and Electric car companies, By embracing the inevitable challenges in rocket launches and the energy transformation in cars , Musk turns entropy from a challenge into a opportunity for the advancement of Human species.

Entropy In Artificial Intelligence

“Can entropy ever be reversed?”

“We both know entropy can’t be reversed. You can’t turn smoke and ash back into a tree.”
“Do you have trees on your world?”
The sound of the Galactic AC startled them into silence. Its voice came thin and beautiful out of the small AC-contact on the desk. It said: “THERE IS INSUFFICIENT DATA FOR A MEANINGFUL ANSWER” - Isaac Asimov

Just like how we humans learn that in order to be less chaotic everyday by taking constant effort to get better we need to also teach the AI models to be less chaotic and improve over time . This is where the concept of Entropy become’s so fundamental in building ML models that are responsible , ethical and do things that it is intended to do.

The Entire concept of Entropy is based on Probabilities - To exactly understand how Entropy plays an Important Role In AI we need to understand three concepts

Information Content
Information content is nothing but the amount of information or in general surprise associated with the outcome of an event. Less Probable Events Have High Information Content And More Probable Events Have Low Information Content .
Suppose Let’s say Roger Federer and Carlos Alcaraz are in the finals of Wimbledon Championship. The Probability of Federer winning ( basis his form and him winning many in the past and also playing against a kid ) is very high compared to Alcaraz.
Say the Predicted Probabilities are Federer : 90% , Alcaraz : 10%
But after the finals out of nowhere Alcaraz against all the odds wins against Federer. Here the Information Content is very high compared to the information content you would have gained from Federer winning ( because it would not have been a surprise since you knew he would win with high probability )

P(Federer) > P(Alcaraz) , hence IC(Federer) < IC (Alcaraz)

Hence IC(X) = f(P(X)) ~ -log_b(P(X))

IC(Federer) = 0.152 bits

IC( Alcaraz) = 3.321 bits

Entropy
We know entropy is the measure of randomness or uncertainty associated with an event. From the above scenario know the true probability distribution is :

P(Federer , Alcaraz) = { 0 , 1 }

Entropy is the average information content across all possible outcomes of true distribution and Entropy H(P)=−∑P(x)log(P(x))

**Since the true outcome is certain (Alcaraz wins with probability 1), the entropy is:
**
H(P)=−∑ P(x)log(P(x)) = − (0 * log_2(0) + 0*log_2(1)) = 0 bits

Entropy is 0, reflecting that there’s no uncertainty in the true distribution when one outcome (Alcaraz winning) is certain.

Cross - Entropy

Cross Entropy is the measure of predicted probability distribution compared to the actual true distribution. In our case

true probability distribution is P = { 0 , 1} predicted probability distribution is Q = {0.9 , 0.1 }

Given two discrete probability distributions,P and Q, over the same random variable X, the cross entropy between P and Q is the expected information content when using Q to describe P

H(P,Q) = −∑ P(x)log(Q(x))

w.r.t our scenario

H(P,Q) = − [0*log_2(0.9) + 1*log_2(0.1) ] ≈ 3.321 bits

Information Content: 3.321 bits for Alcaraz’s win, indicating surprise compared to the actual outcome.
Entropy: 0 bits, showing no uncertainty in the true outcome (Alcaraz’s win was certain).
Cross Entropy: Approximately 3.32 bits, reflecting the inefficiency/surprise of using the predictions instead of the true distribution.

So even In AI , the idea is to train the ML models in such a way that over time the entropy is reduced and the distribution of probabilities it predicts should be much closer to the actual true distribution. This is the core of how today's GPT models like ChatGPT , Claude-3 , Gemini work. It's Just predicting the next word in the sequence and the core idea is make sure we train these models in such a way by that over time we minimise entropy i'e the next word predicted is as closer to the true distribution. Ex: If the training data has the sample ' The Cat Runs' and if we ask the ChatGPT 'The Cat ______' it should be able to Complete Runs as the final answer. Initially the entropy is so high that it might output random junk but over time we reduce the loss and hence you see good results

Humanity Is More Beautiful Than What You Think

There are many great things about hiking- the humongous snow-capped mountains, the amazing sunrises and sunsets, the night sky with milky-way, the huge meadows, different kinds of plants and trees you encounter, the ridge and open grassland walks, the local food and many more. But the most beautiful thing to me is the bond you develop with your fellow trekkers, trek leaders, trek guides, and the fellow locals you meet on your way, they are your family and everything to you during the trek.

And with people, you also get to learn about their culture, and different diversities, and the collective knowledge we share and learn from each other is what makes it so much more worth loving the people around you. I have had incredible luck and fortune to meet some amazing people who have inspired me and with whom I still hold a long-standing friendship even after the trek.

If People Looked Up At The Sky They Would Live A Lot Differently - Calvin & Hobbes

Did You Know That

The last stars will die out 120 trillion years from now, followed by 10^106 years of just black holes.

Condensed, that’s like the universe starting with 1 second of stars and then a billion billion billion billion billion billion billion years of just black holes.

Stars are basically the immediate after-effects of the Big Bang. A one-second sizzle of brightness before settling into eternal darkness.

Below Is My First Image Of Milky Way

From my early days, I was always fascinated by the mysteries of the cosmos. I used to always look up to the sky and wonder about our place in the stars. Thinking about what is the meaning of life given that we are all going to die at some point in time. This also led to my deep interest in generally understanding how things around us work - i.e. Physics. I wanted to become an astrophysicist if not an ML Engineer. Reading the snippets of Calvin and Hobbes, The Hitchhikers-Guide To The Galaxy, and watching movies/Shows like 2001 A Space Odyssey, Interstellar, and Big Bang Theory fueled my interest in learning more about the planets, stars, and everything about the Universe. I’m still a learner :)

There are very few moments in my life where I realized that we are on this rock hurdling through space and time and most of us go with our daily lives without thinking about this fundamental reality - One of those moments was looking at Milky-way and listening to the Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot & When You see something like this it just changes your worldview for a moment and let's you fully embrace this sense that we are in this tiny planet hurdling through space. It's humbling and a character-building experience.

I’ll Just keep exploring and learning more about this and you never know I might end up immersing myself completely into it.

One of my dreams is to watch a rocket taking off and punch a hole into the night sky and capture a picture of a galaxy with my telescope :) and more importantly, get back to being a student and learn Physics the right way.

Curiosity Takes You Further Than Anything

One of the reasons I’d want to live longer and travel as much as possible is because of the curiosity and the hunger to learn more. I believe the curiosity to passionately learn something new every day takes you further than anything else. Until I started trekking I never knew how the Himalayas were formed or did not even know the fact that they were the youngest mountain ranges in the world Until one of the trekkers explained the entire story behind them. I went back to being a kid at that moment and ended up spending more time learning more.

There’s a difference between knowing the name of something versus actually knowing something and I think one should always aim to be the kind of person who knows the thing rather than a person who just knows how to talk about that thing and it’s better to hang around with people of the same kind who knows about the thing they are talking rather than just talking. I think that’s how you develop real, deep knowledge and you cannot have that mindset unless you are curious enough to learn new things, unlearn your existing beliefs, and replace them with the actual truth.

This drive to be more curious will also make your travel experience more enriching than it is.

The Relationship You Have With Your Authentic Self - The Most Important

I think we live in a world where our thoughts, actions, beliefs, and ideologies are driven by an outside world. It’s how evolution has been where an individual always does things that let him/her be part of a social community and hence social survival, respect, and admiration are earned. That is why we are more social seekers than a truth-seeking species. Probably the entire thing is better explained with humor by my friend Tim Urban Taming the Mammoth: Why You Should Stop Caring What Other People Think

We all belong to a tribe ( Our Family and friends, Colleagues, Social Communities & these days it’s more digital than actually social, religions, etc) and do underestimate how influential the tribe is on our thinking. we always make sure that we are drawn into our tribes because of the comfort and warmth that we receive and at the same time a tribe that understands our goals (Ex: Friends, Your Closest Colleague or your Spouse/Husband). But here’s what my concern is even your closest tribes may reduce the ability to challenge your ideas or your existing beliefs because no one wants you to hurt and also at the same time you are self-interested and encourage ideas and narratives that promote the survival of your tribe. This sentiment was coined by Morgon Housel as well. How often do your views get challenged by the people closest to you? Do you enjoy being wrong?

“Mimicking the herd invites regression to the mean.” - Charlie Munger

As Jeff Bezos said, "Being yourself is worth it, but don’t expect it to be easy or free. You’ll have to put energy into it continuously."

The fight against normalcy is the most important fight of your life. - Sahil Bloom

Aim to be as authentic as possible and listen to your inner authentic voice rather than relying on external validations, does not matter even if the tribe is your closest - Optimize it to be the one where the foundation is built on top of the objective truth.

Travel Changes The Way You Think

Imagine a scenario where you take some time off from your routine, pack your bags, and travel to someplace exotic. You observe a lot, click loads and loads of photos, do all those stunts and drama to click one amazing picture to post it on your social media handle and brag about it and you finally come back from the trip, share your memories and stuff with friends and family, cherish and live with those for few days and again come back to the same routine it was the weeks before. Traveling only for photos or traveling to earn societal status, to grab attention, or to impress someone on social media (The genuine joy of a journey is often best shared intimately with the few closest to you. While social media offers a platform for sharing memories, the essence is truly felt by those who hold a special place in your heart. It’s about creating meaningful connections rather than seeking mass validation, acknowledging that certain experiences are best appreciated by a select audience.) has always been the norm with traveling in this generation.

If these are the core reasons that drive you to travel then it’s almost similar to watching a feel-good movie in a theater, but a lot more expensive, because you are always looking and daydreaming about when your next trip is gonna be. Even most of the stuff that you post online with our current attention spans changing rapidly than ever, people will forget about it in a few days and get back to normal.

Instead

Travel to learn more and be curious - Talk to the locals, and learn about their culture and diversities.

Travel to unplug and re-discover yourself.

Travel to challenge yourself to be more courageous and adventurous.

Travel to seek the truth, observe a lot, and see how your beliefs and ideologies differ.

Travel to read more.

As much as I have enjoyed traveling in 2023, I think it can also be a double-edged sword ( my contrarian view) because if every time you are just traveling to escape your life at home instead of facing those challenges ( I have huge respect for those who face the challenges and overcome it back home than trying to find themselves ate somewhere else ), your are stuck in a never-ending loop of not improving yourself as an individual. Get comfortable with travel being an ordinary experience in your life and you’ll do it more.

True Friends

“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art…It has no survival value;rather it is one of those things that give value to survival”- C.S Lewis

One of my biggest learnings this year how valuable our relationships are and who your true friends are. Most of them are with you through certain periods of life largely when it’s convenient, fun, or when they see the friendship being a transaction. But as you grow real friends are the ones who stay with you when you have none of those things in life, when you have nothing in return to offer to them - The Ones Who Show Up In The Dark. The goal is to cherish those friendships forever.

It’s better to have 1 or 2 great friends than have 100 who do not care about you, those who respect you because of who you are than what you own, and with those whom you can be your true self. I'm fortunate enough to have some amazing people in my life from whom I keep learning every day ( My Intellectual Partners ), those who do not hide anything and say things right to your face when it's wrong, the ones who cherish my wins and are happy for my success as much as their own and I think I can keep going and most importantly whose love and care that I'll never take granted for. Having someone who truly cares about you is one of the greatest gifts of life and the most valuable thing.

We Take Things For Granted Too Often

“The letter I wrote after my son was born said, “You might think you want an expensive car, a fancy watch, and a huge house. But I’m telling you, you don’t. What you want is respect and admiration from other people, and you think having expensive stuff will bring it. It almost never does—especially from the people you want to respect and admire” - Morgon Housel.

Time & The Why’s Behind What We Do: Our Only Real Commodity

We don’t understand or have the ability to comprehend how small our entire human timeline and history is on this planet Earth compared to the age of the universe which is 13.8 billion years old.

We understand time as seconds, minutes, hours, months, and years, but our evolutionary brains cannot grasp how old the universe is, something that we cannot fathom to imagine. Imagine compressing the entire 13.8 billion-year history of our universe into the familiar span of a single calendar year, from January 1st to December 31st. This perspective offers a striking reminder of the immense scale of time and the significance of every moment.

January 1st: The Big Bang ~ Our cosmic journey begins with the explosive birth of the universe, the Big Bang. This moment marks the dawn of time itself.

January to August: The Dance of Elements ~ In the early months, elements like hydrogen and helium emerge, setting the stage for the cosmic ballet that follows.

August 30th: Birth of the Milky Way ~ On the cusp of September, the Milky Way galaxy takes shape, a stellar masterpiece in the vast cosmic canvas.

September 2: Formation of Our Solar System ~ Just days later, our solar system comes into existence, paving the way for the birth of Earth.

September 21: The Blue Planet Forms ~ Earth itself materializes, becoming a haven for the incredible tapestry of life that will unfold in the eons to come.

November 4: The Moon’s Ballet Begins ~ A celestial waltz unfolds as the Moon graces the cosmic stage, born from a dance between Earth and a cosmic companion.

Mid-December: Life’s Modest Debut ~ The first simple life forms emerge, marking a modest but pivotal beginning to the story of life on Earth.

December 17: Breath of Life ~ Cyanobacteria release oxygen, transforming the atmosphere and laying the groundwork for the evolution of complex life.

December 20: Life’s Complexity Unveiled ~ Multicellular life emerges, showcasing the remarkable diversity that life on Earth would come to embody.

December 25: The Reign of Dinosaurs ~ Dinosaurs rise to dominance, ruling the Earth during the Mesozoic Era with their colossal presence.

Late December 28: Cosmic Reset ~ A catastrophic event, possibly an asteroid impact, reshapes life on Earth by bringing an end to the age of dinosaurs.

December 30: Rise of Mammals ~ Mammals take center stage, filling the void left by the departed dinosaurs and diversifying across the planet.

Late December 31: Emergence of Homo sapiens ~ In the final moments of our cosmic calendar, Homo sapiens, modern humans, appear, representing a mere blink in the vastness of time.

December 31, 23:59:59: The Tapestry of Human History

All of human history right from the birth of the first homo sapien to the invention of math, physics, religions, monuments, cultures and doctrines, art, agriculture, kings, wars, science, and technology to where we are today - everything happened in the last secs of December 31st. It's something to think about, all of that entire history to happen to where we are today makes me think how valuable our own time is on this planet and how truly grateful for us to be alive. It's truly a gift and should make you think, and prioritize how you want to use your time on what you have.

Nature Is Our Greatest Source Of Inspiration

“It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.” - David Attenborough

I vividly remember the day as I write this when it was around 5:15 in the freezing cold morning at the Molley campsite and we were on our way to SabarGram to summit Phalut which is the 2nd highest peak in West Bengal(3600m) and also from its peak you would get to see some of planet earths highest mountains The Everest (8849m), Kanchenjunga (8586m), Lhotse (8516m) & Makalu (8481m). It was just myself that early in the morning and there was no one at least 500 m behind or ahead of me, I just looked back to be greeted by the entire sky slowly getting covered in orange and that small dot you see is Jupiter.

After a few minutes, the sun was slowly rising covering the entire sky into a magical orange landscape, the moon was right on top of me and we get to see the first views of the Sleeping Buddha range with Kanchenjunga the world’s third highest mountain at the center. My words cannot truly express what I was witnessing.

We humans are generally wired to always think about ourselves, our loved ones, or 99% of the time what other earthlings think of us, then here I was exactly at that moment in time being inspired, awed by what I have just witnessed and thinking that we need to collectively work hard to preserve this experience not just for us but for our future generations to come (something we inherited). A moment that made me feel more responsible and accountable towards not just myself and the people I deeply care about, but our greatest source of Inspiration The Natural World.

Embrace The Uncertainties In Life - Don’t Plan Out Every Detail

“The only certainty is that nothing is certain.” - Pliny the Elder

“I think that one should recognize the reality even when one does not like it;indeed, especially when one does not like it “- Charlie Munger

Morgan Housel (The Author Of Psychology Of Money) said “People get excited when they’re surprised. Not when something big happens, or when they find the right answer. They get happy, mad, scared, amused, and astounded when they stumble across a gap between expectations and reality.” What he truly meant was Happiness = Expectations - Reality. I think about this more often now than ever through the kind of experiences I have had across all the areas of my life so far in my relationships with people, at the job, the expectations your family has on you, or just the kind of expectations that I wanted to get from the treks and after a certain point I was able to spot a clear difference in what led to happiness and what did not. Most of the time I had huge expectations that led to disappointments and heartbreaks and the most unexpected things led to some of the most fulfilling and happiest moments of my life so far. June-August 2023 was one of the darkest periods of my life battling with my inner demons and getting to know the underlying truth of certain things, the actual reality sometimes might break anyone and contrary to how I might look to the outside world I always thought of myself as a emotionally strong and mature person. But here I was trying to accept the reality as it is, battling depression, and for a man to come out and say that he is struggling with mental health needs to have a lot more courage than what he already has, In acknowledging my battle against the mental health, I’ve come to realize a newfound strength, one that I now proudly recognize within myself, a testament to the resilience that emerges from facing the darkness within. This does not mean one should not have expectations totally but do have it with a worldview that reality can be something different than what you might expect it to be all the time. Just Embrace Uncertainty and randomness.

This change in perception also led me to focus on uncovering the truth rather than trying to be right always because avoiding something if it does not align with your existing beliefs is a dangerous game to play and it’s always good to know the other side of the coin as well.

The Need To Be Sustainable

We have come as far as we have because we are the cleverest creatures to have ever lived on Earth. But if we are to continue to exist, we will require more than intelligence. We will require wisdom - David Attenborough

What do you think are some of the greatest mistakes that mankind has ever made? The Chernobyl Disaster in 1986, Hitler’s Invasion Of Poland In 1939, Genghis Khan, The Manhattan Project that led to the invention of the Atomic Bomb, etc, I think the list can keep going but if we think these are some of our greatest mistakes we are mistaken. The greatest one is the Climate Change and Biodiversity Loss that is unfolding every day, it’s happening right in front of everyone and if we don’t act soon over the next few decades it’ll be the biggest and probably the only disaster ( If Mr Elon Musk fails to make us a multi-planetary species ) that mankind has ever committed.

Before the industrial and agricultural revolution, much of human history was sustainable, because that was our only way of living. we were okay and happy with what we got. Everything was in balance. But over some time we become smarter and just an idea could change things for us, that’s how we ended up inventing rockets and going to the moon, able to look beyond our planet, and the solar system, live longer and much happier than our ancestors, eradicated deadly diseases, captured the first picture of a black hole, made technology more accessible than ever and by using our brains which is the most critical part of our identity we were able to look into the smallest to the biggest things in the known universe and do things that no species can ever be able to do. All of this led to so much good and bad, the right and the wrong things happened but largely we humans become more comfortable, we are a species that is filled with greed, capitalism is ruling nations all over the world, and finally, the over-consumption of the limited resources of the earth is leading to a much bigger disaster and the worst part is in this process we are aiming to be the only last species to be alive on this planet. Just imagine if we continue to exist as we are today, there will be a day when you show your kid on your digital device that this is how Lions, Elephants, Giraffes, and birds used to look like, how sad would that moment be if the kid asked you where are these now? What would your answer be? would you be telling them that we humans ended up being responsible for the loss of these species? - I would leave this to your imagination.

1968: Earthrise (Apollo 8)

The truth is when we took the first image of the planet Earth, we realized that we are just a small rock hurdling through space and time and that our resources are not infinite enough to keep consuming the Earth in an unsustainable way. The reality is with or without us the wild will return ( what happened in Chernobyl after the disaster was a clear example), we often think about saving our planet but we need to be sustainable to save ourselves and our species. Anything that cannot be consumed forever is by definition unsustainable and we need to strike the right balance, consume less and there’s a much bigger need to act and live as hunter-gatherers more than ever. That’s our only option.

I’m not trying to say that we have to live like hermits, I’m grateful for everything that we humans have done to make every generation live better than theirs, our quality of life has improved, but largely we have traded all of this amazing thing with the pristine natural world and there’s a need for us to be responsible and mindful about the choices we make till the time we become a multi-planetary species.

This is one of the reasons I love hiking with Indiahikes because of their sustainability practices and the idea of leaving mountains better than we found.

There are certain things that we can all do to be sustainable

Primarily, Reduce The Usage of Plastic.

Consume Less - Think Twice Or Ask Yourself 'Do I Really Need This'? Whenever You Order Something Online/Offline - Do It Only If Necessary OR if the item is sustainable.

Use Public Transport/Bicycle for your means of transport as much as possible.

Turning Down The Capitalism and Putting Money Where Our Mouth Is

Take Care Of Our Planet and It’ll take care of us :)

We Become A Purpose Driven Species Than Just A Profit Driven
Patagonia is such an inspiring case study and I wonder why can’t we just learn from them

The Most Important Investments You Can Ever Make - Physical & Mental Health

“A healthy man wants a thousand things, a sick man only wants one” - Confucius

I realized the importance of Physical and mental health when I started taking Hiking more seriously. Exercise or Mindfulness was never a regular thing to me. I used to take walks whenever it was possible but unlike other things, I never deliberately pushed myself to be regular with my workouts until later I realized while I was on the hikes that as much as I loved nature, the solitude, the mountains, the songs of the birds in the wild and every other reason that had led me to do more hikes, I hated the fact that my body and mind was not always fit enough to embrace the very own things I wanted completely, moments where I just wished why the hell am I doing this, can’t I just offload my backpack? can’t I just quit and go back to my comfort zone? can’t I go back to my apartment, grab a pizza/eat my favorite biryani, binge-watch a series, and just get done with my day? - but since I always loved embracing the pain, loved pushing my limits, I was able to complete the treks irrespective of my lack of complete physical and mental preparedness for the same. I think everyone will realize the importance of certain things once you hit rock bottom or go through some very low points in life which make you realize that you need to invert your current lifestyle. Most of the the real important things in life like the value of Money, Good Relationships, and Health are noble pursuits. you'll only realize its true value when you don't have one, it's almost like oxygen you know its value because without it life cannot exist.

But the truth is I can’t keep doing this, there’s a certain limit to everything that your body or mind can withstand, some other day I might face much harsher challenges that I might not be able to embrace. I wanted to get healthier both physically and mentally.

Unlike setting unrealistic expectations with my workouts or waiting to set my new year new me resolutions or trying to prove a point to someone else - I started slow ( trying not to be stupid and just focusing on getting 1% better every day, replacing the bad habits with good) but focused towards being disciplined and most importantly I wanted my WHYs to drive me towards my physical and mental well-being. I always believed that if you have a strong WHY behind everything that you do in your life either achieving financial freedom, success, or whatever it is - It helps you be more responsible and accountable towards that thing.

The WHYs behind me wanting to be physically and mentally strong are:

Live long enough to see my kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids kids :)

To Learn More About Everything and Be Curious - You have one life and there’s so much more to learn and hence I need to take care of myself.

Keep Playing A Sport

Travel More

Adversity Shapes You Up - Finding Joy In Doing The Difficult Things

I was listening to a podcast by Lex Fridman with Walter Isaacson ( who wrote the biographies of Steve Jobs, Henry Kissinger, Albert Einstein, Leonardo Da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin, Jennifer Doudna, and most recently about Elon Musk) and there was a topic about what is the role of any kind of difficult childhood and Adversity in the lives of great men and women, great minds - is it a requirement, a catalyst to do great things or is it just a simple coincidence of fate? - It’s not a requirement was the answer from Walter but he also quoted that it’s certainly true that a lot of really driven people are driven because they are harnessing some kind of adversity or demons they faced in their childhood and end up doing things that a changes the course of humanity forever.

I was thinking about this in my last trek (Sandakphu Phalut) that most of us are in some ways trying to battle and harness our demons and maybe it’s part of the reason we end up doing more riskier, adventurous, and wilder things.

I used to think about the immense strength that is required by these huge mountains, how the hell the ecosystems and biodiversity, the people who just go on with their daily chores around these mountains sustain the harsh climates and here I’m a trekker trying to fit into the same. Trying to get used to the negative temperatures in the winters, the harsh cold winds hitting your face without giving a damn about who you are, washing your utensils in the cold water, climbing a very long steep ascend with your 10 Kg rucksack, hiking hours in the rains to reach the next campsite, sweating yourself in the blazing hot sun and getting your blood sucked by the leeches (an experience I would never forget), struggling to fit into my sleeping bag and waking up as early as 4 am to start your days hike, trying to be awake late in the nights till 1-3 am or waking up to see the milky-way and many times being disappointed because of unclear skies and Life, akin to these challenges, mirrors a series of struggles- confronting the darkness, venturing into the unknown, absorbing numerous blows, and yet, remarkably, I always find the joy in the difficulty and when your heart opens in the presence of those one or two images you see after facing all the challenges is something to live for.
